Textile
The Emsland Group offers specialty starches for the textile industry. Materials made from natural or synthetic fibers are known as textiles or fabrics. They come in countless forms and are used in a wide variety of applications. The production of textiles is a complex, multi-stage process that relies on different techniques. In all these steps, starch often plays an important role in achieving the desired quality and performance of the final product.
Sizing Agents
Protection During Weaving
Woven fabrics are created by interlacing threads. Before weaving, threads are often coated with a starch-based protective film—a process known as sizing. This sizing strengthens the threads, helping them withstand the tension and friction they encounter during the demanding weaving process. For effective processing, the starch must also be easily washable after weaving.

Print Thickeners
Sharp Prints with High Color Yield
Printed fabrics are especially popular in apparel and home textiles. Whether flat screen or rotary printing is used, precise application of color through a screen is essential. In these processes, starch functions as a print thickener, ensuring sharp contour definition, enhancing color yield, and increasing color brilliance.

Finishing Agents
Improving Feel, Function, and Appearance
Textile finishing involves treatments that enhance the properties or functionality of fabrics. Starch is especially well-suited as a finishing agent, helping to add body to fabrics such as napkins, tablecloths, and shirt collars, while also improving stain resistance. In some applications, starch is also used to increase fabric weight.
