The Wittingen plant was built in 1962 by C.H. Knorr Nahrungsmittelfabriken and, since its takeover by the Emsland Group in April 2000, also belongs to the corporate group. In the 1970s the many possibilities and excellent properties of using potato granulate for the foodstuff industry were already recognised in Wittingen, constituting the basis for successful product development. Production levels were doubled between 1985 and 1998 and production changed over from campaign-oriented processing to today's year-round production. In order to ensure the competitiveness of the Wittingen site, in the years 2002 -2003 extensive investments were made. With the introduction of a second production line, production capacity was increased by more than 100 %. In 2005, a new feed plant for the processing of potato remains to high-quality animal feed also began operation.
For the Wittingen region, Emsland Food GmbH is an important economic factor: The Wittingen plant employs 75 persons, and the availability of potatoes as a natural raw material is ensured by around 250 contract farmers in the potato growing region around Wittingen.
